Some are mainstream places that people are often heading to, but some might potentially become the next attractions that must be visited yet it hasn’t been famous. Discovering hidden gems overlooked by travelers, these are places in Indonesia where the locals mostly spend their quality time but never failed to attract tourists. Labengki Island Labengki Island or the locals name it as Sulawesi’s Raja Ampat is a remote island that has various nature-based tourist activities. Never hesitate to make a way there before it becomes one of the popular destinations in Indonesia. It lies in Southeast Sulawesi, and it can be reached in under 1-2 hours from Kendari, the capital of the province by speed boat. It has so much beautiful scenery spots like beaches with dozens of white sand and clear blue water surrounded by green rocky hills. It is also interesting to reach its cave, snorkeling spot, and lagoons. Besides, it has stunning underwater with colorful and exotic corals. Administratively, the National Park is located in the area of West Papua province and Papua province. Aside from a massive tourism potential like snorkeling and diving, you can also interact with marine biota. Some endangered species must be protected. They are Sperm Whale (Physeter Catodon), Nicobar Pigeon (Chaleonas Nicobarica), Dugong (Dugong Dugon), Whale Shark (Rhincodon Typus), Sun Fish (Mola-Mola, and four of seven sea turtle species in Indonesia. Punthuk Setumbu, Magelang For the sunrise lover, Punthuk Setumbu is one highlighted place that must be visited, and the location is not far from Borobudur Temple. People will start to gather around 4.30 at the top of the hill to watch the sunrise. The short climb up the steps there pampers you with views of incredible scenery. It’s about 15-20 minutes hike, or you can rent a car or minivan to visit the site. The fog is heavier than the summer period during December and January, quite difficult to see Borobudur from above, but your hard work will be paid off with beautiful panorama. It’s recommended to do when you are in Yogyakarta, take a ride from there, or stay in the Punthuk area to get a little easier. Nikoi Island Pampered by the enchanting natural landscape of Nikoi island, it still has retained its pristine condition. Located less than 85 km from Singapore, the beach is surrounded by white sand and the coral reefs with spectacular colors. Baliem Valley This valley was discovered by American Richard Archbold on 23 June 1938, he suddenly sighted this incredible valley from his seaplane. High up in the mountain of central Papua, the Baliem Valley is 72 km long and 15-31 km wide in places. The only access to Baliem Valley is by flying to the town of Wamena from Jayapura. When you are heading there, you can also witness the traditional life of Dani, their traditional ceremonies by trekking. Bring your snacks or meals when trekking because there is a very limited number of restaurants inside the Baliem Valley. Menganti Beach, Kebumen This one is potential to be one of the recommended tourist sites in remote Central Java even though the route is challenging and still rarely visitors, but always being a valuable destination to visit. The ocean looks perfect for surfing. Don’t miss to take a selfie, wefie, or groufie, alone or together with family and friends. You will get the beautiful scenery of the white sandy beach. The beach itself is surrounded by big, rough rocks. You also may see living fish and sea creatures around the rocks. MacArthur Monument The historical site of World Wide II, the legacy of General MacArthur is located for about 1,5 hours from Jayapura, overlooking Sentani in the Indonesia province of Papua. The monument itself sits atop hilly drive through an Indonesian military base. The monument is relatively modest. There is a small barrier area that needs to be unlocked for access at the top of the monument, You can witness the whole landscape of Sentani and the Airport, seeing airplanes do take-off and landing. The sunset is always best to enjoy in the afternoon. This part of the island of Papua is beautiful scenery to visit with an incredible moment in history.
